The refereeing: abysmal. Again. Some bad decisions:
1) Owen dived for the penalty, there was no contact whatsoever.
Slight contact was made, but that wasn't even enough to fell my 3-year
old niece though.
2) Sol Campbell's goal near the end of normal time was fine, Shearer's
elbow made no contact with the goalkeeper.
Shearer's elbow did impede Roa's movement towards the ball, hence a right
call. Whether Roa could have gotten to the ball if Shearer hasn't
elbowed him is another matter.
3) Just after that as Argentina charged up the pitch and went through on
goal the Argentinian was given offside...wrong. He was then clattered to
the ground for what would have been a penalty.
This whole thing should not have happened. The reason why the referee
allowed the Argentines to make the free kick when several English players
were off the pitch celebrating the disallowed goal of Sol Campbell is
still beyond me.
4) Tony Adams handballed in the box to stop a cross (if you disagree, ask
yourself what his hands were doing above his head waving all over the
place)
I don't remember this incident clearly. Are you talking about the one in
the second half immediately before Paul Merson substituted Paul Scholes?
If yes, it's quite likely a penalty, but I am not dead sure though.
5) An Argentinian defender handballed while tussling with Shearer....in the
box again
No doubt a clear penalty. Jose Chamot's hand made contact with the ball in mid-air when he jumped to meet the ball with his hands over his head.
The referee also didn't allow the players to help themselves with refreshment at half time of overtime. Though it was fully in his power to do so, to me, it was a ridiculous act.
