Stam was lucky because the referee didn't spot his tripping of Ortega, not because Ortega dove. If the referee's eyes had been sharper, he would have picked out the foul, and Ortega's fall would have seemed somewhat justified. It was quite illogical for him not to call a penalty simply because he felt Ortega over-reacted to Stam's foul. Well, a foul was a foul, period.
As an aside, Ortega had a very tough time against the Netherlands. I
opined here earlier that he is the king diver in this World Cup.
However, in this match, many of his falls were actually due to fouls of
the Netherlanders, quite a few of which were not called. Maybe he has
such a bad reputation as a perennial diver that the benefit of doubt was
given to his opposite party. But anyway, he fully deserved the red card
for his head butting Van Der Sar.
Argentina was not lucky in this match. Look at the shot
by Batistota, the ball hit the post on the inner right side. One or two
millimetre it had been a goal.
The match actually could go either way, with both teams hitting the woodwork in turns. The Dutch had slightly better control of the midfield, not the least due to the efforts of Davids and Ronald De Boer. A few clear attempts at goal by the Dutch were denied by brilliant goal-keeping of Roa. But Argentina's breaks, mostly orchestrated by Veron, were equally menancing. Lopez's great runs down the left always wreaked havoc in Netherlands' defence. At the end, Bergkamp rose to the occasion, and flashed a moment of genius to score a magnificient goal to carry Netherlands to the Semi-Final.
